Katya Robles: Making a Mark as a Figure Skating Costume Designer

Figure skating is a showcase of incredible athleticism and skill and a platform for artistic expression. While the breathtaking performances on the ice captivate audiences, the costumes worn by figure skaters play a crucial role in making a statement and enhancing the overall presentation. One designer who has made a significant impact in the world of figure skating costumes is Katya Robles, the founder of Katyusha Icewear.

I first learned of Katya when my sons needed new costumes for the season (I have three sons who figure skate). I ordered six men’s shirts from her, and the quality of her custom-made costumes blew me away. I was impressed with how she matched her designs to the music, her attention to detail, and her responsiveness to all my emails. Even though she is based in Mexico, shipping to the United States was fast, and the costumes arrived with enough time for the boys to practice with their new costumes before the competition. As a much-appreciated gesture, she even sent specially-made garment bags for each shirt, which we all thought to be nice.

Impressed with not only the quality of her products but how she conducted her business, I asked Katya to share her story with us. Here is her story:

What is your business about?

I operate an international brand based in Mexico City called Katyusha Icewear that specializes in creating and selling custom-made figure skating dresses and attire.

What inspired you to start this business? 

Being passionate about sports and having a background in art and design, I found the perfect combination to capture and express my love for figure skating. Around 14 years ago, when my daughters were figure skaters in Mexico City, I encountered a challenge: there was a lack of high-quality figure skating dresses available locally. This inspired me to take matters into my own hands and start making dresses for them as a hobby.

As I delved deeper into this craft, I discovered my genuine passion for designing and creating figure skating attire. At that time, e-commerce and social media platforms were not as prevalent as they are today. However, word of mouth and personal recommendations helped me gain recognition as people I knew began requesting dresses from me.

Recognizing the demand for quality figure skating dresses and the positive response I received from the community, I decided to turn my hobby into a full-fledged business. This marked the beginning of my journey, driven by the desire to provide figure skaters with exceptional garments that they couldn’t find elsewhere.

One of the most gratifying parts of running this business was the realization that I could successfully balance my roles as a dedicated mother and an entrepreneur. It has been incredibly inspiring and fulfilling to share the personal and business aspects of my life with my children and family. This journey has taught me that it is never too late to pursue new endeavors, and age should never be a barrier to following one’s dreams.

What were the biggest challenges you faced in starting your business? 

Being self-taught was one of the most significant challenges I encountered when starting my business. As I began this venture from scratch, I had to acquire knowledge and skills in various areas, which has proven to be an ongoing challenge. Learning how to handle every aspect of the business, from design and production to marketing and finance, required a great investment of time and effort.

Another significant challenge I faced was establishing the logistics for selling internationally. Expanding my business beyond local borders and reaching customers in different countries presented a whole new set of obstacles. It demanded extensive research, understanding complex shipping processes, navigating customs regulations, and ensuring smooth and reliable delivery to customers worldwide. 

However, by embracing a mindset of continuous improvement, I was able to navigate these challenges and build a successful business that operates internationally.

How are you marketing your business? 

To market my business, I employ a multi-platform approach with a strong emphasis on social media. I leverage popular platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and Threads to reach a global audience. These platforms offer a wide reach and enable me to connect with potential customers worldwide.

However, I consider exceptional customer service as a key marketing strategy. By providing personalized attention, addressing inquiries promptly, and ensuring a smooth purchasing experience, I aim to create a positive impression on every customer. Satisfied customers are more likely to recommend my brand to others, which is a valuable form of word-of-mouth marketing.

Overall, my marketing strategy combines the power of social media platforms, customer service, and the creation of valuable content to raise brand awareness and promote a loyal customer base.

How are you balancing your business with your personal life? 

I maintain a clear separation between my business and personal life by effectively managing my time. I meticulously plan my day, week, and month, ensuring dedicated blocks for work and social activities. During work hours, I focus solely on business-related tasks, dedicating my full attention and energy to them. 

Similarly, when it’s time for personal activities or socializing, I prioritize being present and fully engaged, allowing for quality time with loved ones. By establishing these boundaries and staying committed to them, I can maintain a healthy balance between my business and personal life.

What lessons have you learned so far about being an entrepreneur? 

I have learned innumerable valuable lessons along the way. One of the most significant lessons is the importance of recognizing that greatness is achieved through small actions. Every step, no matter how small, contributes to the overall success of the business. Each action carries significance and should never be underestimated or neglected.

Being an entrepreneur has taught me the importance of embracing every opportunity, no matter how small, and understanding that success is a result of the collective impact of these seemingly small actions.

How do you see the business five years from now? 

In five years, I envision my business expanding its reach to even more countries and cultures. One of the aspects I most enjoy is the opportunity to connect and collaborate with diverse and wonderful individuals from around the world. Working side by side with people from different backgrounds and cultures not only enriches the business but also promotes personal and professional growth. 

I hope to see my brand become recognized in the figure skating industry globally, known for providing top-quality, custom-made attire to skaters worldwide. Through strategic partnerships, continued innovation, and a customer-centric approach, I aim to solidify my business as a trusted and preferred choice for figure skaters.

What tips can you share with other entrepreneurs thinking of starting their business? 

Starting a business requires a great deal of dedication and resilience. Be prepared to face challenges and setbacks along the way. It’s important to stay committed to your vision, adapt to changes, and consistently put in the effort needed to achieve your goals. Strive to embrace a mindset and disposition of lifelong learning. Being open to new ideas and approaches can help you navigate the ever-changing business landscape. Most importantly, surround yourself with supportive individuals who believe in your vision. Don’t be afraid to seek guidance along the way and engage with like-minded individuals and audiences.
