Creating a Web Site for Under $100

Our editor, Isabel M. Isidro, wrote in the PowerHomeBiz.com Small and Home Business Blog   an engaging and informative piece on how she redesigned WomenHomeBusiness.com for under $100.

While she is not a programmer, redesigning WomenHomeBusiness.com became her pet project. She has always wanted to learn about CSS and other programming languages, even buying several books on the topic. But she never had any opportunity to do it. Until this time.

As Isabel reveals in her blog:

Redesigning Women Home Business was a three-month long process for me. Since it was not a rush job, I was able to take as much time as I need to do what needs to be done. Was it a good use of my time? Probably not in the sense that my main strength lies in developing content, but the skills and knowledge I learned from the process made it all worthwhile.

The result of her work is this site — which is a significant improvement over the old site. Aside from the obvious aesthetics changes, the improved navigation and ease of content presentation has improved customer experience at WomenHomeBusines.com. Our metrics showed that average time on site as well as pages per visit have increased by about 100%.

The most important part of the post are the lessons she impart on how to create your own site for under $100:

  • The first step is to understand your needs, in terms of what content you will have and how you want to present that content.
  • Use a free management system such as WordPress.
  • Search for an inexpensive (and there are even free) templates for your chosen CMS.
  • Configure the theme design based on how you want to present your content and how you want its aesthetics to look including colors.
  • Configure the CMS to your liking.
  • Use the forums to get help especially with technical questions.
  • Enlist the help of friends.
  • Back up your files regularly.
