Starting an online store, and achieving success on the Web, is not easy. I have previously interviewed an online store owner who said it took six months to land her first sale. By then, she was already getting desperate, as she was paying for monthly hosting and merchant account fees and her finances were slowly running out.

There are a number of things that you need to consider when you are planning to sell on the Web.




First, the look and feel of your e-commerce site are very important. You need to make it easy for visitors to understand what you are offering, and to find what they need. You also need to be able to convey trust to make the visitors feel that this is a safe site that will protect their information and that your business will make it easy for them when there are problems about the purchase.

Pictures are also extremely important, yet there are small business entrepreneurs who don’t know how to effectively use photos to sell their products. I often see small business online stores where their homepage is a long bunch of text, and the pictures of their products are way below the page. You go to big boys’ sites such as Sears.com, HomeDepot.com or Amazon.com and their homepages are all full of photos of their products.

Unlike small businesses, big businesses test and test various elements of their web pages. They collect data to pinpoint elements that work and change those that do not work. From the colors of Add to Cart button, the placement and length of their copy, to the tracking of the ROI of their paid ad campaigns, big businesses employ a variety of testing and measuring techniques.

Another key to the success of an online store is finding the targeted visitors — visitors who are interested in the products you offer and more likely to purchase from your store. If you are running an online toy store, you are most likely to find your potential customers in parenting websites and blogs.
