Common Mistakes Women Make in their Careers

A friend complained to me today that she was by-passed (again) for a promotion in her work. She started blaming the office politics and the unfair aggressiveness of the co-worker who got the promotion.

I told her that there may be truth in the factors that she pointed out. But instead of putting the blame on everything and everybody, as many of us tend to do, I told her that she needs to first take a long hard look at herself why she keeps getting overlooked during promotions.


I recommended to her that she read the books of Lois P. Frankel, who knows too well the mistakes most women make. She has authored books such as “Nice Girls Don’t Get Rich: 75 Avoidable Mistakes Women Make with Money” and “Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office: 101 Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers.”

According to Frankel, here are mistakes that women often make in the workplace:

  • Working too hard. The truth is no woman was ever promoted purely because of hard work. Learn to “waste” a little time.
  • Decorating your office like your living room. Unless you’re an interior decorator, it doesn’t pay. Reevaluate your office decor.
  • Feeding others. You’re not “Mom” or Betty Crocker. Think twice before you put food on your desk.
  • Asking permission. Children, not adults, ask for approval. Be direct, be confident.
  • Smiling inappropriately. When men don’t smile they’re taken seriously. Make your demeanor fit the situation.
